School's in, what next?

As we enter a new year, many of us remain cautious yet optimistic about education in 2022. How can we best prepare for the year ahead, and what do we hope for education this year?

A K-12 strategic planning officer in the United States shares his school district’s contingency plans for a future of education where disruption is the norm, stating how innovations in the COVID-19 era requires anticipating every scenario for education to continue. Students from Southeast Asia reflect upon two years of schooling in the pandemic, and share their hopes and ambitions for the next two years while growing up as “Generation-C”.

While there are many lessons to draw from schooling in the pandemic, new and existing challenges await us. What silver linings can the education community find, and how will education continue to evolve as we not only respond to, but also shape a new paradigm of learning and living? We hope to uncover some of these answers through the year, as we continue to bring you the latest developments and analyses in education.

Education in the Spotlight:

Architecture and social design shape learning. An unconventional preschool in Singapore wins the President's Design Award for its unique design encouraging unstructured play.

Wealthy South Korean and Chinese parents are opting for international schools in the once sleepy tourist destination over places in the West, Shanghai and Singapore.

The University of Exeter in the UK experiments with exams created in part by computer codes — and appears to have success.

Many universities initially seduced by the promise of increased revenue signed deals with Online Program Management companies — but some have since turned away.

Parents nurture their child’s development when they tell stories and have conversations with them.

The centre, housed in Temasek Polytechnic's campus, puts together various systems and machinery common in buildings to give students a hands-on look at operating buildings sustainably.

A new climate plan reveals the surprising impact K–12 schools have on the environment and what they can do to be more green.

That's all for the week!
