Leading in uncharted waters

The COVID-19 crisis has sent governments, corporations and citizens hurtling to respond to the numerous and unprecedented challenges thrown their way.

A school in the United States was undergoing reform when COVID-19 struck. Despite the pandemic threatening to jeopardise the academic progress made, the improved school culture previously brought about by school principal Jason Beber helped staff and students navigate remote learning. Elsewhere in the country, innovative school leaders found opportunities in crisis and took the chance to reshape learning.

In China, where the viral outbreak was first reported, school leaders worked closely with the government and technology companies to keep education going. From the very beginning, principals rallied teachers, staff and parents to support remote learning.

If it takes a village to raise a child, then it takes visionary leaders to ensure that no child is left behind. In September 2020, ten academics and school principals will share their experience leading their schools and communities in our upcoming The HEAD Foundation webinar series “Educational Leadership in a Crisis”. Stay tuned for details!

Education in the Spotlight
In a post-COVID world, Singaporeans considering an overseas education will likely be more discerning about where they apply to.
Addressing the climate crisis should matter to all organisations – but universities have a bigger role to play than most.
Why are so many people ill-informed about the pandemic, despite decades of compulsory science education?
A school with no classrooms, homework or grades encourages creativity and imagination, rather than an ability to sit still and nod.
The unpredictable challenge brought by COVID-19 offers a dry run for how educational systems will be challenged to adapt to climate change and its various effects.
While the innovators quietly grew, the education system continued to neglect the teachers at the heart of their schools. Then COVID-19 hit, accelerating the changes already underway.
If governments and multilateral organisations do not intervene immediately, the damage done today to education systems will be felt for decades to come.

That's all for the week!
