On lockdowns and circuit breakers - Navigating the new normal

Over half the world's population, more than 3.9 billion people, is currently on lockdown or called to stay at home due to COVID-19. Singapore ourselves went into circuit breaker mode this past week and we’ve had to adapt to many new norms. Besides adjusting to new schedules and a new way of life, many have also experienced the loss of income as economies take a hit.

In these unprecedented times, experts are pointing out a much overlooked impact of COVID-19 and isolation - its effects on mental health. To help the public overcome this, doctors have suggested 14 ways you can protect your mental health during this pandemic and what you can do when social isolation gets to you.

Nevertheless, it is not all bad news. The lockdown on Wuhan, the epicentre of COVID-19, was lifted on 8 April 2020, bringing an end to 76 days of harsh clampdowns. Shops started to open and travel bans lifted, although a sense of caution remains over new infections that may emerge. Austria and Denmark will follow next, as both countries look to ease restrictions on public life in stages. The US too announced intentions to reopen in May. Together, their experience may offer some insights on how long a lockdown needs to be, and the pace it should be lifted, in order to be effective.
