Rethinking education, improving schooling outcomes

Education systems around the world have been grappling with severe disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Schools have been shuttered and, where possible, classes moved online. Distance learning has shone a spotlight on many issues, but one proved to be consistent across many countries: teachers need to be trained and empowered to use technology to teach.

This crisis and its ensuing disruptions present us with an opportunity to rethink our education systems and learn from others: a Brazilian city underwent a tenacious, 23-year, city-wide project that propelled it to the top of school rankings in the country; a school in the U.S. encouraged students to lead their own learning and class discussions, resulting in increases in interests and proficiency in reading; and teaching social-emotional academic learning skills has led to well-rounded graduates.

Together, we can emerge from this crisis with stronger education systems.

Education in the spotlight
The surge in online learning in China highlights the importance of infrastructure, platforms and the preparedness of teachers, students and parents.
Not all virtual learning are the same. Some may be more suitable than others.
Climate change cannot be approached only in a theoretical direction. More emphasis should be laid on inculcating practical activities in the curriculum.
Education opens doors to science and government, institutions where women are desperately needed to help solve climate change.
The International Universities Climate Alliance showcases climate change research from 40 universities in 18 countries across six continents.
In the US, there is a remarkable dearth of easily accessible, age-appropriate materials that teachers can use.
In times of crisis, universities need to demonstrate the aspiration of education by taking on social responsibilities.

That's all for the week!
