Gaming the education system

In a bid to tackle youth online gaming addictions, the Beijing government has issued a series of guidelines to limit gaming screen time to three hours a week for those under 18, just ahead of the new school year. 
 
Conversely, a professor from a university in the United States offers the viewpoint that video games should be brought more into the classroom rather than banned, for games have proven to be key tools in facilitating experiential learning, even teaching students core skills in STEM subjects. 

However, games which promote student learning outcomes are quite different from the popularised Massive Multiplayer Online (MMO) games owned by China's targeted companies Tencent and NetEase. As the social impact of video games on youth continues to be questioned, there should be greater differentiation between games that are cognisant of and promote educational outcomes, and games meant for pure entertainment. It is perhaps more useful to consider the potentials as well as pitfalls of the video game medium to create varied experiences for students, rather than characterising the industry as a whole.

School districts are increasingly transitioning to cheaper and greener options. But old building habits and funding constraints can pose a challenge.
