On lockdowns and circuit breakers - Navigating the new normal
Nevertheless, it is not all bad news. The lockdown on Wuhan, the epicentre of COVID-19, was lifted on 8 April 2020, bringing an end to 76 days of harsh clampdowns. Shops started to open and travel bans lifted, although a sense of caution remains over new infections that may emerge. Austria and Denmark will follow next, as both countries look to ease restrictions on public life in stages. The US too announced intentions to reopen in May. Together, their experience may offer some insights on how long a lockdown needs to be, and the pace it should be lifted, in order to be effective. |
